Visa Requirements for Travelling to Fiji

Entry permits, visa types, and travel formalities — updated May 2026

U.S. citizens: visa-free up to 4 months Visitor permit on arrival Official source: immigration.gov.fj

Do U.S. Citizens Need a Visa to Visit Fiji?

No. American citizens do not need to apply for a visa before travelling to Fiji. The United States is on Fiji’s list of visa-exempted countries, which means U.S. passport holders receive a visitor permit on arrival at any official port of entry — including Nadi International Airport, Suva (Nausori Airport), and major seaports. This visitor permit allows a stay of up to 4 months. For a full overview of the Embassy of Fiji in Washington D.C. and its consular services, see our homepage.

U.S. citizens — entry at a glance: No visa required · Visitor permit issued on arrival · Maximum stay: 4 months (extendable by 2 months) · Valid biometric passport required with at least 6 months’ validity beyond your arrival date · Return or onward ticket required · Proof of sufficient funds required · Confirmed accommodation recommended.

Entry Requirements for All Travellers

Whether you are visa-exempt or require a visa, all travellers entering Fiji must meet the following basic entry requirements at the port of entry. Fiji immigration officers make the final determination on admission — meeting these requirements does not guarantee entry.

Passport validity is strictly enforced: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date in Fiji. Airlines will check this at check-in and may deny boarding if your passport does not meet this requirement — even if you hold a valid visa or are visa-exempt. Renew your passport well in advance of travel.

Visa Types for Fiji

Fiji operates several categories of entry permit and visa. The right one for you depends on your nationality, the purpose of your visit, and how long you intend to stay. The main categories are outlined below.

Permit / Visa Type Who it applies to Maximum stay How to obtain
Visitor Permit on Arrival Citizens of visa-exempted countries (incl. USA, UK, Australia, Canada, EU members) Up to 4 months On arrival — no pre-application needed
Visitor Permit Extension Holders of a visitor permit wishing to stay longer +2 months (up to 6 months total) Apply at Fiji Immigration before permit expires
Single Entry Visa (SEV) Citizens of non-exempt countries — one trip Up to 4 months per visit Apply in advance — valid 3 months from issue
Multiple Entry Visa (MEV) Citizens of non-exempt countries — multiple trips Up to 4 months per visit Apply in advance — valid 12 months from issue

Work Permit Foreign nationals employed in Fiji As per permit conditions Apply via Fiji Immigration — employer sponsorship required
Student Permit Foreign nationals studying at Fijian institutions Duration of study programme Apply via Fiji Immigration — institution enrolment required
Residence Permit Foreign nationals seeking long-term residency As per permit conditions Apply via Fiji Immigration
Transit through Fiji: If you are passing through Fiji en route to another destination and your transit is 3 hours or less, no transit visa is required. If your layover exceeds 3 hours, normal visa requirements apply. You will also need proof of an approved visa or permit for your final destination country.

How to Apply for a Visa to Fiji (Non-Exempt Nationalities)

If your nationality requires a visa to enter Fiji, you must obtain approval before travelling. Visa applications can be submitted online via the Fiji Immigration portal or in person at a Fijian Immigration Department office. Applications should be lodged at least 2 to 3 months before your planned travel date, as processing takes approximately 14 working days from receipt of a complete application.

1

Check if you need a visa

Visit the Fiji Immigration Department’s list of visa-exempted countries to confirm whether your nationality requires a visa. If your country is not on the exempt list, you must apply for a visa before travelling.

2

Select the correct visa type

Determine which visa category applies to your purpose of travel — tourist, business, transit, work, study, or other. Applying for the wrong category may result in refusal or complications at the border.

3

Gather your supporting documents

Standard documents required include: a valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity, 3 recent passport-size photographs (colour, plain background, full-face view), confirmed return or onward air ticket, proof of accommodation in Fiji, proof of sufficient funds, and any additional documents specific to your visa type. Documents not in English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.

4

Submit your application

Apply online through the Fiji Immigration online portal, or submit in person at a Fijian Immigration Department office in Suva, Nadi, Lautoka, Savusavu, Levuka, or Labasa. Applications from abroad may also be submitted through the Embassy of Fiji in Washington D.C. for nationals of non-exempt countries residing in the United States.

5

Wait for processing

Processing takes approximately 14 working days from the date of receipt of a complete application. Incomplete applications or those requiring additional documentation or verification may take longer. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified of the grounds for refusal.

6

Travel with your approved visa

Once approved, the visa is endorsed on your passport or, where the passport has not been submitted, a visa approval letter will be sent to you. Carry this approval letter and all relevant documents when you travel. Possession of a visa does not guarantee entry into Fiji — immigration officers make the final determination at the port of entry.

Extending Your Stay in Fiji

If you are in Fiji on a visitor permit and wish to stay longer than your initial 4-month allowance, you may apply for a 2-month extension, bringing the maximum stay to 6 months in total. This extension must be applied for before your current permit expires, at a Fiji Immigration Department office. You will need to pay the applicable fee and demonstrate that you continue to meet the entry requirements — valid passport, sufficient funds, and confirmed onward travel.

Overstaying your permit is a serious offence. If you remain in Fiji beyond the validity of your visitor permit without obtaining an extension, you may be classified as a Prohibited Immigrant (PI). This status can result in fines, detention, deportation, and a ban on returning to Fiji for a specified period. Always ensure your permit is valid for your entire stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work in Fiji on a visitor permit?

No. A visitor permit does not authorise you to work in Fiji. If you intend to take up employment, you must obtain a work permit before or upon arrival. Work permits require employer sponsorship and must be applied for through the Fiji Immigration Department. Remote working for an overseas employer while on a visitor permit occupies a legal grey area — consult the Fiji Immigration Department directly for guidance on your specific situation.

Do children need their own visa or permit?

Yes. Every traveller, including infants and children, must hold their own valid passport and meet Fiji’s entry requirements. Children under 18 travelling without both parents or legal guardians must carry a certified parental consent form, completed by the absent parent or guardian and certified by a Justice of the Peace or equivalent authority.

Are there any health requirements for entering Fiji?

There are no mandatory vaccination requirements for travellers arriving from the United States. However, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends several routine and travel vaccines for Fiji, including hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and ensuring your routine vaccinations are up to date. Check the latest health advisories on the CDC and U.S. State Department websites before travel.

What items are restricted or prohibited on entry to Fiji?

Fiji has strict customs and biosecurity regulations. Many agricultural products, plants, seeds, and animal products are restricted or prohibited to protect Fiji’s natural environment and agricultural sector. All items must be declared at customs on arrival. For a full list of restricted and prohibited items, consult the Fiji Revenue and Customs Services at frcs.org.fj and the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji at baf.com.fj.
